The Headmasters of the Drama School of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre:

1957-1977 Voldemar Panso

1978-1982 Aarne Üksküla

1982-1985 Eduard Tinn

1986-1995 Kalju Komissarov

1995-2011 Ingo Normet

2011-...      Peeter Raudsepp

The founder of the school was VOLDEMAR PANSO (30.11.1920 - 27.12.1977),

an Estonian director, actor and a theatre pedagogue. As a young man, Panso worked in a peat bog and wrote short stories for newspapers. He graduated from the Higher Theatre School in 1941 and later obtained his director's degree at the Institute of Theatre Arts of Moscow under Maria Knebel and Aleksander Popov - both students of Stanislavski. Panso was an actor in the Drama Theatre from 1941-50 and a director at the same theatre from 1955-58. He founded the Higher Theatre School in 1957 at the Tallinn Conservatoire and held the headmaster's position at the school from 1957-1977. To this day it has remained the foremost school for theatre arts in Estonia. Additionally, Panso worked in the Estonian Television, Estonian Radio and at Tallinnfilm. He founded the Youth Theatre in 1965 which finally broke the 16-year monopoly of the Tallinn Drama Theatre for the Estonian language plays in the capital and re-established a fruitful competition.
